Here is the deal.

I was admin on your guys' server late last night. Pvt. Nick was there as well.

The issue was with Seals Omicron, who was generally being a d**k. I call it squad-match style of play: grab a powerful vehicle, bomb in, and take out the MHQ and/or base.

I will not base this discussion on the possibility of hacks or cheating. Instead I will focus on the element of fun, and how one selfish person can ruin the fun of an entire server full of people, and even chase off people who are new to this game and struggling with such a steep learning curve.

So the first time his tactics were a surprise. The game had been going about 20 minutes, and we were still taking our second and third towns. We reassigned to taunts and sounds file making fun of how much we sucked and how much he ruled.

The second time was not a big deal either. We had an AI commander at beginning, so by the time a real commander was voted, our base was already exposed and we had no build points left. Our base was destroyed in about 15 minutes, so we laughed it off and started a new game. At this point there were 4 people in TS, and we were helping teach some noobs how to play.

More taunts and sound files.

The third time was an "WTF??" for everyone, and we suspected foul play. We had put forth a lot more effort into a good base location, with defenses, and it was starting to get annoying. We did not, however, give in and start yelling about cheating, although there was some grumbling in the global chat. We reassigned again.

Surprisingly, there were not really any taunts this time. Maybe he was getting bored?

The fourth and I believe final time, Omicron appeared out of nowhere....literally 100 feet from my character. Maybe I suck, maybe he rules, or maybe I was spending too much time alt-tabed on youporn.com, I dont know. I do know that it was really pissing everyone off. By this time a bunch of people had left, and the level of fun in the server was non-existant.

It was blatantly obvious that Omicron was not in the server to promote a fun  game for all. I feel we were nothing more than cannon fodder for his base destroying squad-match skills. It is a selfish and rude way to ask when people are obviously not into your style of play. This is a GAME for most of us, remember...it is meant to be F-U-N.

My opinion, and I speak for nobody but myself, is that allowing this behavior is unacceptable regardless of squad affiliations. This is assuming that the intent of your public server is to provide a fun environment for the public, and to promote a game that is held in high regard among the few of us that play it in the U.S. If my assumption is in error, then please disregard.

I also feel that your Seals buddy should be taught to respect your server. His actions last night were NOT the actions of a friend of your squad, period.

This is not intended as a justification for my actions, as I am sure you feel that I overstepped my authoritah as a voted-in admin. However, I feel that I was representing the best interest of those who voted me in by:

- Ensuring mission selection was done,
- Attempting to keep the teams even,
- Getting the game started in a timely manner,
- Getting everyone to vote for a team commander so the game did not suck,
- Helping teach new players what the hell was going on,
- Trying to keep the game enjoyable by booting someone who was obnoxious and rude.

As any server admin knows, it can be downright stressful to keep a server going. I was lucky, as I was able to admin and still have great fun despipe my self-appointed responsibilities. Maybe I felt that assuming admin and keeping your guy's server full and fun was a way to repay you for letting me play here for free. I think I did a good job, as several people played through several games, and thanked me for booting Omicron.

This is my "case". I did not think it was a big deal, but since Omicron obviously felt he was doing nothing wrong, it is. If this is something that you feel you must ban me for, then so be it.

This would imply that squad affiliations are of utmost importance, regardless of player integrity or a lack of respect for your server, and that would indicate to me that this is not a place where I have any interest in playing.

If you want to contact me, my AIM is adamb6955, MSN is adam6955@yahoo.com . However, keep in mind that I have already spent too long typing about this.

Thanks,
Adam

To add to this situation, your friend is now chasing me around other servers harrassing me and disturbing other players.

I would be upset if it were not so funny  Laughing

There is a saying that I cannot remember, but it has something to do with your friends and how they reflect on you...

...and to top it off, another one of the classy "SEALZ" crew came in to spew some 4th grade insults. It was classic, I wish I could have recorded it.

According to them, I am the first moron to play ArmA. I insisted that I was actually the first douchebag, but they would not have it!!

...and don't forget about the threats:

"Your hell has just begun Moridin"

"I have all your info" (referring to IP, etc)

I am sorry, but it is late and I cannot laugh at these guys any more tonight. I will be back tomorrow to get a few more good laughs in!!

Enjoy everyone!!

Thanks for posting.  Its been awhile since Ive played the game but on an admin side.  Our guys will look at your post and Im sure any of our guys that were in there will pipe up on our inhouse side of the forum and it will be discussed.

Since you stated you were admin did you happen to grab his information?  Our admins have the ability to look it up but a date and time might be helpful so it will be easier for them to find.

Reason is sometimes the rude masses do tend to change Names and ids to reflect those we play with just to start crap.  Not saying they did or didnt but all the information you have would help get to the bottom of what was going on.

Again thanks for your concerns.  And no it doesnt mean that just because we might be friends with another group that they are allowed to act like fools on the server and the same definitely goes for our guys.

Give it some time for some here to look into it.

Moridin,

I'm afraid you have caught us right in the middle of the summer doldrums with very few members about.   You posting has started an internal thread and we are discussing it. Let me do what I can to immediately address the issues you have brought up.

As a voted in admin, you had the capability to take action in both punting and banning players that you thought were either cheating or griefing the game.  As long as you are acting in a good faith manner then you should be OK with your decision.

I must admit that we generally play in a squad based manner and if you had seen a contingent of 1-8th players there your experience might have been the same.  Domination, especially when just played on the southern island is pretty predictable now that it has been available for a few months.  The spawns are not truly random, and so if not moved right away are easy to locate. Also we allow a mod on our server called "Instant View Distance"  which lets users with it enabled modify their view distance at any time, for both ground and air.  This can provide a serious advantage if you know roughly where to look.  As you play more Domination I think you will have a better sense of what can happen on servers when season players are communicating effectively and aggressively going for the win.

Bottom line, I support your decision to ban "Omicron", but if I had been there I don't think that would have happened, but that is easy for me to say, you were the one on the spot.

What concerns me even more is that you outline being harassed on multiple servers and threatened.  This is unacceptable behavior and reflects very poorly on that player and their squad/clan.  I suggest that you record any of this kind of communication via screen captures and relay it on to the leader of the squad with a formal complaint. At that point it should become an internal disciplinary issue for them to deal with.  I know we at 1-8th would take it seriously.

Wrapping things up, we have gone ahead an unbanned "Omnicide", and are counting on him to exercise restraint from hassling you other than through normal, active game play.  And I want you to feel welcome to play on our server at any time.  Thanks for bringing this to our attention!  -bbs

First I want to apologize for my delayed response. I am a Firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service, and I have been on a forest fire for the past 16 days.

I want to thank you guys for being adult about this. I appreciate that you trust my judgment, especially since I have not played on your server for a very long. I enjoy your server, and your squad has some great members, so I would like to help others enjoy it as well.

To be clear, I did not ban him, as I was hoping he would get the hint. I really should have grabbed some screens while Omnicide and his clan buddy were harassing me on the other server, but for some reason I was not thinking about it. I was probably thinking more about staying positive and not getting sucked into the stupidity of it all.

I agree with pretty much all things said above. A bit of background on myself: I have played ARMA since it came out, and OFP for a good 3 years...pretty much off and on since it came out in 01. I have been around, and I am pretty familiar with various gametypes, as well as editing and fast paced gameplay. I like to think I work well with the members of your squad when I am on their team, and they present a great challenge when I am playing against them.

There is no game quite like OFP or ARMA, and I guess it just bugs me to see deathmatch stupidity....at least at a time when there are noobs and casual players around.
